South Broad Street

Here are historical photos of the west side of the square.

1917-1918

This photo is one of the set bought from eBay. In a Facebook discussion, Ann Chambless says that this photo is “a view of Broad Street from the Courthouse. The proof of this is the R. E. and B. E. Jones Store sign that states they are ‘Scottsboro’s Biggest Store.” It is a known fact that the Jones Stores was on Broad Street.” Ann notes that none of the buildings on the square shown in this photo are still standing.

Nat Cisco notes that the tall cedar trees in the back of this photo are Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Clyde Broadway notes that “the Big House left of the center of picture in the background in the Proctor House-Heritage Center, and the Big House near the left edge and parallel to it is a Brown House.” The Proctor and Brown Houses were constructed about the same time by the same builder. Clyde also wrote, “Notice the steps going up from the street on Broad Street tot he sidewalk. There were about three our four steps in that location in front of the Ritz Theater until the renovation of the square in the mid 1970s filled in the street and raised the level.” Here is a photo of that sister house.

The bungalow-style home at the far left of this photo, with its large white barn in the backyard, is on the site of the current city hall. It was built by Don Moody’s grandfather Milo Moody. Don recalled saddling his horse and riding around town as a child. The house was torn down in DATE as result of an eminent domain seizure by the city.
