Founded in 1892 by William Jacob Word, Word Lumber Company was located at 116 North Broad Street. It was a hardware store and headquarters for Word Building Company, which did residential and commercial subcontracting in Scottsboro for over 100 years. The business was run for many years by W. J.’s son Cecil, and later by his grandsons Bruce and Bob Yates. The lumber business was located on West Willow Street. Word Lumber closed after 122 in business in 2015.
